Get Signed by a record label (by GothamJungle)

Today one of the important things you will need as a recording artist is a great website. Most record company A&R people, music managers, music agents, music publishers & music producers will ask you if they can check out your website instead of having you send them a demo. Make sure that your website allows visitors to listen & download your music samples. If you really want a record deal with a successful record company you will need to go to great lengths to promote your own music. I recommend that you get a professional promotion package together your self. Some record labels insist that you already have some kind of following. If you are going to sell your records online you should get a barcode first at http://www.cdbaby.net/resources/barcode.htm If you are already a seasoned recording artist or music producer you should already have a complete & mastered LP or close to it. As a professional recording artist it is your responsibility to get with music producers & complete albums. You should have a head start. Creating records is sometimes the least of you’re A&R person’s problems. So now you have your music demo, pictures, biography, a great website with pictures & audio clips. Sounds like your ready to approach music managers, a&r, music agents, music producers & music publishers.

What do Music Publishers Do?

A Music Publisher is basically a copyright administrator. I am often impressed by how many ways a music publisher can turn music into money. Publishing companies have the capabilities to collect & generate income from your recordings. Publishing rights are the right that you have to a song that you wrote. You must be the only writer to own 100% of the publishing from the minute you wrote the song. As long as your work is original you own it. Before I get any further I want to explain a little more about music publishing.

This Week on Da Charts-Da Movies (by Mive Content)

Color me surprised GoJu Nation.  I didn’t see this one coming but in hindsight it is comprehensible. I thought (as we all did) that “The A-Team” would be a lock for the #1 spot this week.  It would knock off “Shrek Forever After” and lose this week to “Toy Story 3“.  But Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and the Karate Kid had other ideas.  The family movie again trumps the summer action flick.   And by 30M no less.  This kind of  discrepancy is a major sign of where the money may be going this summer. Damn I really thought “The A-Team” would have a huge 1st week.   Oh well it’s not my money.

“Release the Kraken!!!” When Liam Neeson (as Zeus) bellows that command, you know it’s about to get ugly.  With technology finally catching up with the storyline, “Clash of the Titans (2010) was a shoe-in for the #1 spot this week.  Lets add that Sam Worthington (on fire fresh off Avatar) as Perseus adds leading man heat to this redo.  Now they cleared 1/2 the budget in week 1 (64M+) so they should cruise to this being a solid money maker.  Other notes.  If only there were no monsters and fairy tales in the way of Tyler Perry.  Otherwise there would be no reason his newest opus “Why Did I Get Married Too?” wouldn’t be #1. But no tears for Mr. Perry, at #2 his movie claims 30M in it’s 1st weekend eclipsing it budget of 20M.  That’s why he’s Hollywood’s golden child.  He’s tapped into the psyche of middle class/lower class & church class African-Americans and has a foothold. And after co-executive producing “Precious”,  his heat meter is white hot… Outside of “The Last Song” making a cameo appearance (hunh??) at #4 there isn’t much more to report.  So enjoy the top 10 list and with Easter officially over, it’s officially spring.  Enjoy your car shows & circuses that come to town this time of year.  1.

Wi-Fi for the iPad and iTouch (by Q'ban)

There’s a new iPhone, iPod touch and iPad app in the Apple App Store that you can use to buy access to Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots: Boingo Wi-Fi Credits [iTunes link].

Free Wifi... or is Wifi Free?!?!?

The app is free and comes with one credit for one hour of service. Further service costs $1.99 per hour, but when you buy 10 hour credits you get another free. If you need to find a place to use your credits nearby, there’s a Google Maps-based hotspot locater.

Wal-mart Wants Every CD to Cost Less than $10 (by GothamJungle)

Wal-mart wants every CD you buy to cost less than ten bucks. And the nation’s largest retailer — which moved a quarter of a trillion dollars’ worth of goods last year — usually gets its way. Suppliers who don’t accede to Wal-Mart’s “everyday low price” mantra often find their products bounced from the chain’s stores, excluded from being sold to the 138 million people who shop at a Wal-Mart store every week.

Lucian Grainge Will head Universal Music Group Starting 2011 (by GothamJungle)

This one counts as news in a technical sense, only: The people who own the world’s biggest music company have finally announced plans to bring in new management.

Vivendi says it will install Lucian Grainge as head of its Universal Music Group unit in 2011, replacing longtime head Doug Morris. The Grainge era will really start this summer, since Universal’s international boss will be moving to New York in July, and he and Morris will be “co-CEOs” for a six-month stint.

If There is a 4 Year Old in Your World.... READ THIS...(Mive Content)

There is a devil amongst us people. The Australian Beatles for Children has invaded the American landscape.  And it’s 10 years in. 4 yr olds across the globe are going bananas for the Wiggles. Sprout (PBS cable channel) has them on a regular 3 hour a day rotation. And Six Flags has a Wiggles world attraction at every Amusement Park.  In addition to the merchandising, music, DVD’s & world touring of shows.   Here is the business behind this phenomenon.  Be prepared to gag but take notes.

This Week on Da Charts-Da Movies (By Mive Content)

Just like the album charts.  The facts are the facts.   There is no spin control when the numbers don’t fit.   This weeks movie chart is a prime example.  The over marketing but well timed Valentine’s Day is of course the #1 film this weekend.  Recouping the full movie budget in one weekend.  Stellar work.  ON the flip side.  The Wolfman with the classic story line and Benicio Del Toro/Anthony Hopkins is disappointing at #3 (30M +) wtih a $150M + budget.   Let’s hope that picks up. We’re looking at the same thing with  John Travolta’s “From Paris With Love” &  Mel Gibson’s “Edge of Darkness”.  Here your top 10 from the weekend.  Next week may be a blockbuster (link below) or netflix weekend at this point.  Enjoy. 1.
