In 2011 – 12.4 million viewers. In 2012 – 6.1 million. That’s the discrepancy in viewership for the MTV Awards this past Thursday. This award show has been the official 12-34 demographic last hurrah before the school season is officially in full swing. And the stars seemed to be aligned for a successful broadcast. We had Kevin Hart (who is the current “it” comedian) hosting. We had Kanye West & Kim Kardashian making a public appearance. Wiz Khalifa & Kanye’s ex Amber Rose made a public baby bump announcement also. And let’s not forget Rihanna & Chris Brown sitting next to each other. What could go wrong? GothamJungle has some theories…

“What you wanna do. Wanna be a baller, shot caller, brawler?” – P.Diddy – ‘It’s All About The Benjamin’s’ – No Way Out (1997). Fifteen years ago and the sentiment of that rap classic still rings true. Basically, because of the slow recovering job market along with rising cost of living, options are few. And if you’re relying on the Government for relief, you’ll see for them it’s all about the Benjamin’s. So with the election less than 2 months away, both parties have officially stepped to the plate with political prowess looking to get your vote.

For those who saw Minority Report starring Tom Cruise, technology was as much as a character in the movie as the actors. As we observed glass technology taking a major step forward we felt inside that type of growth was a far ways off. But that’s not the case GoJu Nation. Corning has been pioneering glass technology in a big way. They currently have a viral video with over 19 million views showing exactly how close they really are. Take a second look (if you have already viewed it) and appreciate how quickly the future is now..

Unquestionably, YouTube has been one of the 21st century phenomenons that has become a social stable. You can’t visually stay relevant unless YouTube is inclusive in your plan. It brings your creative vision closer to the public and if your blessed to go viral, it can change your lifestyle. What GothamJungle loves about YouTube is the graying of the entertainment playing field. An aspiring actor can potentially receive just as many views as an award-winning thespian or reality show participant.

Really need you to pay attention to this post GoJu Nation.  It’s important to know who is behind the scenes and making this entertainment world go round.  I’m not sure if your aware of how strong Ryan Seacrest is in the media game.  He’s become almost the modern-day Dick Clark literally. It’s not just American Idol and doing radio. It’s turning into a multi-media umbrella with tentacles in a lot of different directions.  Know how many of you out there in GoJu Nation have entertainment aspiration, take a look at this post. It might inspire you to think differently. And that is one of the tenants over here at GothamJungle.  Enjoy.

I would like GoJu Nation to be as renaissance as possible.  Now we’re based on delivering quality so I wanted you to be aware of some business realities with the jobless rate dropping in 37 states last month.  That might be an indication of things to come (right…). Now I’m far from a stock guru and I’m just starting to get my legs underneath me when it comes to navigating the investment waters. But I do know that you can’t live check to check forever and there needs to be an investment of some sorts in your life.  Especially if you intend on living comfortably. So I’m not presenting any stock tips here. But I think it’s important that GoJu Nation is aware of how some companies are performing in specific industries.  So today (being that we’re an online entity) we’ll give you some popular tech companies and how they’re performing.  It’s important to note that as much as these are household names, brand identification isn’t everything.  I’ll let you guys come to your own conclusions.

Question GoJu Nation.  Do you know what industry instantly collapsed with the introduction of the internet?  Encyclopedias. They immediately went the path of the dinosaur once the world-wide web became a culture staple. That’s the beauty and the curse of change.  It moves us forward but there are business casualties along the way.  In 1998 the digital cinematography/film era gained traction and changed the film/tv & camera industry completely. Kodak which was founded in the 19th century (1892) was the standard in film for over a hundred years. From their famous cameras to supplying film to the entire film & television industry, this behemoth was prosperous for generations. Then they got hit by a lightning bolt in technology with the advent of digital imaging.  Kodak stuck to their guns and reluctantly came on board to this paradigm shift. As a result they have become the next casuality of the new corporate business model.  Now don’t cry they have been successful for over 120 years but for every start there is a finish. Courtesy of CNN‘s Aaron Smith and Hibah Yousuf lets take a look at the business details.

Usually at the beginning of the year you get a lot of top 10 lists & stats pertaining to the previous year etc. A lot of the information is fluff and provides no illumination whatsoever.  But this one stat screams GoJu Nation so it seemed appropriate.  It’s imperative to understand the landscape of the industry you wish to pursue. Especially in a recovering economy. It’s just prudent behavior. Now a lot of my world likes to ignore the facts and approach the music industry with a stubborn approach of “I’m chasing my dream”.  Well here’s some relevant material that will add some “color” to that “black & white” ambition.  This is good stuff GoJu Nation. Enjoy.

I was asked to explain why a music artist would need a publicist, and that’s a good question, but first I want to explain what a publicist is for those that don’t know (and there are plenty.) A publicist is a trained professional in media relations and branding who will be your liaison with journalists, editors and producers. Lately, that heading has also evolved to include social media expert due to the emergence of so many blogs and websites that have replaced many print publications and the fact that so many of them live on Facebook, Twitter etc.

BareNecessities.com

A publicist is the person you entrust to reach out to media and social media outlets on behalf of your brand to secure content postings and interviews in order that you may gain exposure for yourself and your project. They are an ambassador of you and the teller of your story to newspapers, magazines, television producers, radio shows, websites and bloggers. Ideally, this person has spent years cultivating contacts and relationships with journalists and bloggers and is able to professionally present your project before the outlets that are apropos to your brand and convince those outlets that you are worthy of the limited editorial real estate available. This is what makes a publicist so valuable; their relationships and the ability to know which outlets will be most receptive to your project and story.

The next logical question then would be, when do you need to bring a publicist on board? The answer would be ‘when you have a story to tell.’ Most media outlets survive by selling advertising and this means they have to sell either newspapers or magazines, or the ratings of their show or site must be worthy of advertisers’ money. This means that all content must be of a quality that maintains their brand with their audience, or their numbers fall and it becomes difficult to sell ads. With that in mind, your story has to be something of interest to their audience that will keep them coming back for more. It cannot simply be that you are an up-and-coming artist with a music project of some kind dropping. The world is chock full of those. Be sure that you have done your groundwork and built a healthy buzz for your brand, starting in your own region and working out. If the folk in your own neck don’t give a damn, you can’t expect people in other regions to care. Expect to start slowly and build as your buzz and story build. It is important to keep your expectations realistic to the level that you are on in your journey. Be wary of publicists that over-promise to get your check. Do your research and find someone with a proven track record for your type of brand and the level that you are on.

When deciding on whether or not you need a publicist, ask yourself these questions and answer them honestly; have I built a decent buzz in my town/city/state? Am I a draw for shows in my area? Are my mixtapes/EP’s moving respectable numbers? Do I get support of any kind from local radio? What is it about me and my brand that stands out above the rest of the striving artists trying to get on? What am I doing or have I done to make me different?
