What’s up GoJu Nation!! Here’s the recap of my predictions for WrestleMania XXVIII I made last week. To make it easier for you to follow and for me to recap, I left previous week’s comments and added to what I wrote. This week’s comments are in red. I commented on the matches in order. Let’s see how I did.
Match #1 Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship – I expect this match to kick of the show and a baby face should always win the opening bout to set a positive tone for the fans. Also, I’m looking for one of the two titles to change hands. I’m picking Sheamus winning. This match opened the show and Sheamus is your new World Heavyweight champion as predicted. The match was all of 18 seconds as Sheamus kicked Bryan with a brogue kick in the only move of the match. I’m guessing they wanted to build this feud over the next few months, but I think this was a wasted opportunity. See my comments on the Big Show-Cody Rhodes match. I’m 1 for 1.
Match #2 Randy Orton vs. Kane – This match means absolutely nothing. It’s just a way for Vince McMahon to reward 2 of his guys. WrestleMania paychecks are HUGE! This was probably going to be Orton vs. Wade Barrett, but with Barrett hurt he gave the pay-day to Kane. A nice gesture by Vince. Since the match means nothing, it’s always good business to put the baby face over. Randy Orton wins this one. Kane wins this one with a chokeslam off the top rope. I had too many baby faces winning, so I’m not surprised I got this one wrong. In my eyes this makes the rest of my predictions that much stronger. I’m now 1 for 2.
Match #3 Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes for the IC Championship – Big Show will one day be in the WWE Hall of Fame. Cody Rhodes is an up and coming legit star that the company so desperately needs. A win here means nothing for the Big Show, so look for Cody to take this one. Big Show knocks Cody out with the WMD and is your new IC champion. I HIGHLY disagree with this! With Rock on this show, you can count on new or lapsed fans tuning in and it was a great opportunity to introduce that audience to new stars. I’m now 1 for 3.
Match #4 Beth Phoenix & Eve vs. Maria Menounos & Kelly Kelly – Nothing to this one. The baby face celebrity team takes this one. Look for highlights of Maria Menounos pinning Eve for the next week or so. Eve and Maria took this one. She pinned Beth instead of Eve, which I HIGHLY disagree with, but my opinion doesn’t mean shit. Why have your TOP female worker lose to a celebrity? This shows you how the company feels about women wrestlers. I’m now 2 for 4.
Match #5
Triple H vs. The Undertaker in Hell in a Cell (with Shawn Michaels as guest referee) – Michaels will probably be involved in the finish somehow, but he won’t directly cause Taker to win. He’s too much of an iconic legend for his one match of the year to be a tainted victory. The Undertaker will never lose a WrestleMania match. The streak continues. Michaels was involved in the finish to some degree and Taker won cleanly as predicted. After a brutal back and forth, take-this, take-that match. The Undertaker pinned Triple H at the 30 min mark in a GREAT match to go 20-0 at WrestleMania. I’m now 3 for 5.
Match #6
Team Teddy (Long) – Santino Marella, R-Truth, Kofi Kingston, Great Khali, Booker T. and Zack Ryder w/Horsnwoggle and Teddy Long
vs.
Team Johnny (Laurinaitis) – David Otunga, Mark Henry, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre and The Miz w/Vicky Guerrero and John Laurinaitis (Winner becomes GM of both shows) – I’ve been going back and forth on this one. Laurinaitis is horrible on the mic and him being on tv twice a week for the foreseeable future is a painful thought. However, having a baby face GM on both shows doesn’t lend itself well to dramatic television. I’m expecting Kofi to do a cool spot off of Khali and the crowd being hot for Zack Ryder and Booker T. I’m going with Team Johnny. The Bellas each accompanied a team to give them a little exposure. Even though there was a dive, it wasn’t a Kofi-off-Khali dive. Team Johnny came away with the victory. Eve accompanied Zack Ryder and played a role in the finish. I’m now 4 for 6. This will guarantee that I will be at least .500.
Match #7 Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship – Since this feud has just begun and Cena will no doubt need to compete for the WWE title sometime soon, I see Jericho taking this one in the match of the night. Make it 4 for 7, as CM Punk defeated Chris Jericho in a good match-up. It was going to take a hell of a lot to top The Undertaker & Triple H, but this one was good. Here’s my theory on why I thought Jericho was going to win. I figured Cena would defeat Jericho over the summer for the title and then feud with Brock Lesnar, who re-debuted last night on Raw. I didn’t want to spoil this last week as so many people love to do. Surprises should be left as such. Lesnar would then go on to defeat Cena and we would get Lesnar / The Rock at WrestleMania XXIX next year in New Jersey for the WWE title. Which is still a definite possibility.
Match #8
The Rock vs. John Cena – This has been hyped since last year’s WrestleMania. Aside from a possible appearance on Raw this Monday, we won’t see The Rock for a few months. Since he was at the press conference to announce next year’s WrestleMania at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, one can assume he’ll be on next year’s show. So since Rock is leaving and Cena is the WWEs poster child, look for John Cena to come away with the victory. Also, Cena ALWAYS delivers in his WrestleMania entrances. He’s done the Eminem MTV Music Awards thing. Last time they were in Florida he had the FIU marching band play his music. Last year he had a choir. What’s in store for this year? Well, for the first time in a couple of years I was disappointed by Cena’s entrance. MGK performed right before he made his entrance, which excluding his new shirt and color scheme (green), was his usual entrance. I’m sure he made more than a few grand with t-shirt sales though! Flo Rida performed and then the Rock made his normal entrance. After a long fought battle, The Rock pulled this one out and I finished the night at an even .500 at 4 for 8.
As a bonus, and to make myself look like a genius, I’m predicting that the dark match (match before the show goes live) will be the WWE tag champs Epico & Primo vs. Tyson Kidd & Trent Barreta OR a battle royal with the rest of the roster to give them all a small WrestleMania pay day. As for my bonus prediction, Epico & Primo defeated Tyson Kidd, Justin Gabriel and The Usos. Since I got 3 out of 6 participants right, I’ll give myself .500 here as well. I guess that was my theme for the night.
Overall it was a good show and MUCH better than last year’s Mania. Be safe and follow your dreams.
