Social Networks in the Entertainment Industry.

Some people in the Entertainment Industry tell me repeatedly to get a Twitter or Facebook page.  I do admit Twitter and Facebook have become very popular. They have also very quickly replaced Myspace. I see a lot of people in the Entertainment Industry get on all these social networking sites.  I had a Myspace page when Myspace.com was popular. After Myspace was replaced with Facebook and Twitter, I never bothered getting an account with them.  With the changes in technology, I think that people are starting to forget what verbal communication is or the effectiveness of meeting a person face to face.  I think these forms of business communication are more professional.  Building a relationship off of a social network in my opinion isn’t as professional.  I am not old fashioned, but these social networks do not generate much income for my business, nor have people told me that it generates income for them. So I don’t feel the need to obtain a page on one of these. It is just more hassle to update photos, and check another account.  The worst of them all is Twitter.  For those who are unfamiliar “Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., that enables its users to send and read other user messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as “followers”. As of late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, compatible external applications (such as, for smartphones, or by Short Message Service (SMS) available in certain countries.

The website is www.twitter.com.  I have worked in entertainment for over 8 years. I do not have a twitter, nor do I intend on getting one.  Twitter to me is just a person expressing themselves to another, or about a topic, and telling people what they are doing every step of the way.  I think it’s childish.  Technology is taking away the communication through talking or meeting a person face to face as I stated previously.  Building relationships doesn’t take place behind a computer desk. It needs to be face to face.  It has more of a powerful affect that way.

I think websites like Twitter only get professionals in trouble.  For example, in 2009 the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban got fined for expressing himself unprofessionally on Twitter. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban used the social networking tool to voice his anger at league officiating after a loss to the Denver Nuggets. Cuban’s “tweets referred to an altercation between Nuggets player J. R. Smith and Mavs player Antoine Wright.”  http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/luxe-life/2009/03/30/dallas-mavericks-owner-mark-cuban-fined-for-twitter-comments.html

There are plenty of others who got fined too. It just makes me think these people have too much money, that they don’t care about what they say, and don’t mind paying the consequences of paying fines.  Established recording artist’s need to watch what they say as well because fans are seeing what they type and do every step of the way and they can not afford to look dumb in the public eye.  That goes for up & coming artists too. A record label could be reading your comments to see how you interact with others.  It’s not just an up & coming artist’s talent that’s going to get them where they need to go. The artist needs to have the right team behind them, a budget, and determination. When a recording artist is branding themselves, they have to be very cautious in what he/she does.  Rapper Yung Berg made a comment on a radio station about not liking dark skin women. Check out the article here.

We haven’t heard from him since with a new song.  Be careful what you say, it may tarnish your recording career.  If anyone feels getting an account with FB or Twitter is mandatory, please leave a comment, I would like to read your views on it.
