In 2011 – 12.4 million viewers. In 2012 – 6.1 million. That’s the discrepancy in viewership for the MTV Awards this past Thursday. This award show has been the official 12-34 demographic last hurrah before the school season is officially in full swing. And the stars seemed to be aligned for a successful broadcast. We had Kevin Hart (who is the current “it” comedian) hosting. We had Kanye West & Kim Kardashian making a public appearance. Wiz Khalifa & Kanye’s ex Amber Rose made a public baby bump announcement also. And let’s not forget Rihanna & Chris Brown sitting next to each other. What could go wrong? GothamJungle has some theories…

There are times GoJu Nation when da industry gets smacked and the companies themselves are oblivious to the cause. Yet all you have to do is take the blinders off and keep your head on a swivel. This will present the obvious answer. Disposable income is at a premium in these times and how it is spent now depends on “the necessity” more than “the want”. And as much as these kids may want music, the necessity is back to school. This is where the money has been spent the past week GoJu Nation. Which also explains the dismal numbers from this weeks chart.

There have been plenty of boutique labels that have made major marks in this industry. The current “Def Jam” appears to be Cash Money/Young Money records.  They have the artists, the pedigree, the sales & the longevity that lends to its leaders being real executives. But to keep that generational relevance there needs to be some sort of corporate rules. A step by step booklet for you to get.  I’m a firm believer that YMCMB is at risk. Here is why…. “Hero Complex” – an inherent desire to help others. It is a compulsion to help make their world right. Add in a healthy dose of ego and this is what Cash Money/Young Money is suffering from….

Support is something that’s hard to quantify & we have been blessed to have a fan base that follows us consistently. Luckily, when we return we have qualitative content to deliver. We’ve been out the loop too long GoJu nation. There have been a lot of adjustments. We updated the website. Taking on a couple of new responsibilities. And have decided to step up our game as we grow into the year 2013. What does this mean for GoJu Nation? That answer will be arriving in the upcoming months GoJu nation. But for now we have a blog to get done and that means this week on da charts has returned. It’s been approximately 4 months since we posted and that’s way too long for GoJu nation to wait. With that being said, let’s see what the charts have to offer this week.

We end the work week off right GoJu Nation by providing you with the Digi-Singles chart. Let me start by giving a HUGE GothamJungle apology for being lax in supplying you with this listing.  It’s the industry standard and deserves more respect.  I’ll personally take a more involved effort to get you this chart more efficiently. Now lets see what we’re really looking at here.

I’m not gonna let the week escape me without taking care of GoJu Nation. Here are your album charts… Another bleak sales week team. As a barometer, remember that if the 20th album in the country is under fifteen thousand in units, then it’s a down week for sure. Longevity is the key with this chart listing. And your album will have to contain multiple gems to keep this generations attention. It’s worth mentioning that projects in other mediums also have a huge impact on sales. This movie ‘The Hunger Games‘ has officially launched a new franchise. Teenagers went to see this movie 2 & 3 times meaning their money went to popcorn, soda, junk and cinema not music. And when they did buy music it was the soundtrack to the movie. So don’t look at this in a vacuum GoJu Nation. Be aware that other outlets are out there gobbling up the disposable income. Now onto da actual charts.

~Q’ban – I must say I enjoyed the album. Diggy has smooth transitions in his lyrical flow, coupled with solid, tranciant production that fits his vibe perfectly. Your hear the influence of the “now” and the restraint of the “then”. Young Diggy’s first release is hitting the ground running. He is no Drake copy… no Pharrell fake… and definitely not his pops. Diggy has carved a new (yes i said new) lane for himself. Strong concepts, clean lyrical delivery, commercial but very street textured. Rap with great R&B tones…. This guy with the right promotion could be GREAT.

NCAA tournament has the blog compass off a bit. But you do get your album charts before the end of the week. Noticeably, I see the 1st four ( almost five ) albums breaking the 100k download mark. Very encouraging. Also of note, afterwards the drop off in sales is drastic (#20 not moving at least 15k?!?!, pathetic). Just when these charts get my juices flowing, they let me down. GothamJungle did speak in its infancy that the paradigm has shifted from albums to singles, I’m just nostalgic for the album genre to still dictate the landscape. I’ll have to let that go. On to the actual charts GoJu Nation….

Here we go GoJu Nation. Another week, another chart listing for the people. Its been an interesting couple of weeks since the Grammy’s. With the passing of Whitney Houston creating a purchase frenzy, with new artists getting their say so along with the established ones making sure they aren’t forgotten in today’s landscape, it has created an interesting mix of albums making their mark. The most important thing that I take from this weeks listing is that demographic pockets of fans exist that seemingly follow artists in a way that mainstream has yet to quantify.  What that creates is projects like WZRD audibly popping out of nowhere to make a serious dent on da charts. Well that’s the beginning, lets see what else da charts have to offer…

Wondering what effect The Grammy’s have on sales GoJu Nation? The year of Adele is a wonderful case study. The UK superstar had an over 200% bump in sales last week as a result of her Grammy sweep.  Record companies already invest a significant part of their marketing budget for the award season. But now they will re-double their efforts after seeing results like this (fyi.com.. I’m still tight that Katy Perry didn’t win anything that night).  Especially if you can win one of the big 3 (song, record or album of the year). And before we get into da actual chart, lets remember GoJu Nation, The Grammy’s is an awards ceremony celebrating all genre’s of music.  This isn’t a Summer Jam or Jingle Ball where you’re looking for a 3 hour concert. So to all the Soc-Net beasts who are emotionally throwing their immediate opinions around.. think before you press post.
