Water Music artist, Alus, is unique with her R&B/Pop styling and sound. Blasting off in the industry with her single, “Run”, produced by Shaun Bless. In only one month, this budding songstress has already garnered 25,000 hits on Youtube and features on notable publication like King of A&R and Hits Daily Double to name a few.

There have been plenty of boutique labels that have made major marks in this industry. The current “Def Jam” appears to be Cash Money/Young Money records.  They have the artists, the pedigree, the sales & the longevity that lends to its leaders being real executives. But to keep that generational relevance there needs to be some sort of corporate rules. A step by step booklet for you to get.  I’m a firm believer that YMCMB is at risk. Here is why…. “Hero Complex” – an inherent desire to help others. It is a compulsion to help make their world right. Add in a healthy dose of ego and this is what Cash Money/Young Money is suffering from….

~Q’ban – I must say I enjoyed the album. Diggy has smooth transitions in his lyrical flow, coupled with solid, tranciant production that fits his vibe perfectly. Your hear the influence of the “now” and the restraint of the “then”. Young Diggy’s first release is hitting the ground running. He is no Drake copy… no Pharrell fake… and definitely not his pops. Diggy has carved a new (yes i said new) lane for himself. Strong concepts, clean lyrical delivery, commercial but very street textured. Rap with great R&B tones…. This guy with the right promotion could be GREAT.

We continue Ras Benzo and his top 5 list of what you shouldn’t be doing as an artist in 2010.
3.  Beefing with your label in public
Even Nas, in his bitter relationship with Def Jam understands that beefing with your record label is so 15 years ago. The artist is responsible in this era of being mindful in negotiating a deal that supports his aspirations and potential. We all know that labels can be shady, unsupportive and down-right nasty, but they can also be the back bone of what holds you together. Rappers beefing with labels is like over-paid athletes complaining about their jobs/teams/salaries. There are so many people who would quickly take their place, who are lined up for the opportunity to be used and “abused” by the system. Being an artist is not a special talent. Working as a professional musician is a job – just like working in a factory. It might seem glorious, but those moments are the grand total years of hard work by tons of OTHER people. When the person with the least amount of sweat equity invested, often the newest person on the team (the artist) has the audacity to start a public beef with a system that has been working just fine for so long without them, The system does just that – it goes on to working just fine without them.

Congrats are in order for Gabrielle Peluso who has been elevated to the role of GM of the ISLAND DEF JAM MUSIC GROUP.  Pres./COO STEVE BARTELS  announced it earlier this week . Based in NEW YORK, PELUSO  responsibilities will surround the day-to-day business activities, scheduling, and organization on behalf of  the DEF JAM’s artist roster.

NE-YO is moving from DEF JAM GoJu Nation.  He will stay in the Universal building but will be moving floors.  He’s going to be the “flagship” artist to keep the MOTOWN brand alive.  It has been a literal ghost town for the legendary label but hopefull with him & Erykah Badu and Kelly Rowland they can revive the label entirely (if that even means anything to this current A.D.D. generation).  And that’s not all GoJu Nation…..

New York Hip-Hop has taken a major back seat in the last few years (more like close to 10). Our flagship artists have gotten older and although Jay-Z is still relevant, he’s Derek Jeter (still great but we know the end is coming very soon).  Tick tock, tick tock. And the independent label deal has fallen on major hard times.  Only Cash Money is still killing it while all the others have been acquired and dismantled. This brings me to Bad Boy.  Who like a prize-fighter still remains in the top 10 BUT hasn’t held a major title in a long time.  Dirty Money was an exercise that worked but required A LOT of marketing and favors to make it relevant. Well with 2012 in full swing, Bad Boy now has a major piece on the chess board.  Let see what Mive Content has to say about Sean Combs signing French Montana.

Usually at the beginning of the year you get a lot of top 10 lists & stats pertaining to the previous year etc. A lot of the information is fluff and provides no illumination whatsoever.  But this one stat screams GoJu Nation so it seemed appropriate.  It’s imperative to understand the landscape of the industry you wish to pursue. Especially in a recovering economy. It’s just prudent behavior. Now a lot of my world likes to ignore the facts and approach the music industry with a stubborn approach of “I’m chasing my dream”.  Well here’s some relevant material that will add some “color” to that “black & white” ambition.  This is good stuff GoJu Nation. Enjoy.

Wax, this is an artist y’all should look out for. This Scrublife/DefJam artist is getting ready to make some serious noise. I find him to be a edgier (I say this lightly) than Slim Shady. He is comical, witty and lyrical… He borders on the line of corny but he pulls it off. At the end of the day, I believe this is who the kid is… And he is the truth. Who knows if he will explode to the stardom of Eminem, but the fact still remains, he is talented. Max, I see you and will be seeing you about this kid. Yo Wax send me some promo piece mannn!

So this week, the “Showtime!” shout has to go to Olivia. Long Island native, my homie from Five Towns, Olivia has been on a major grind for a minute (well maybe a bit longer… we’ll say an hour). Never really getting the shine she thrived for and some could say she really does not deserve. But love it or hate it Olivia is making a way.
The VH1 Love and Hip Hop star is back in the game. After her slow push at J Records ( Fact: she was the first artist signed to the now iconic label by Mr. Clive Davis himself.) and a major bid of 3 years in G-Unit/ Interscope, Olivia seems to have finally have found her voice.
