Gotta love this time of year.. Labor day is when the movie industry starts releasing movies they want Academy Award considerations for as well as putting out their budget films hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.  No huge budgets here until we get closer to the holiday season. In the battle of the budget action film this weekend, The American (with the star power of George Clooney) beat out the reputation of Robert Rodriquez and his Machete film.  Both flicks are capped with a $20M budget so, they should and will both recoup their respective film companies $$$.

Another summer and if you haven’t noticed GoJu Nation, Sylvester Stallone is on a roll.  Under the radar he’s re-introduced “Rocky” & “Rambo” to a new generation (both with box office success).  Additionally he’s done something that we’ve all wondered if it could be done and this is getting every action hero together on 1 screen.  With the #1 box office spot this week, he’s accomplished that financially and critically. It’s not easy in this climate to take a stereotype and re-invent it successfully.  Not an “Oscar” contender but the money is on the screen.  And in the summer of 2010 that seems to be enough.

Another week and the summer movies are winding down GoJu Nation. We’re at the point we’re the movie studios are hoping for a late summer gem to add to their bottom line and show the industry how smart they are.  This is a slot where  a “Superbad” type movie slides in and becomes the movie of the season.  Now I don’t know  if “The Other Guys” falls in that category but, it is the #1 movie this weekend and did very respectable.   It could be the star power (Eva Mendes, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg) or it could be that the team behind Will Ferrell biggest hits was at the helm.  Either way there’s a lil ways to go to recoup the movie budget but a solid 1st week nonetheless.

One of this countries institutions is movie making.  We are the gold standard around the world in this field.  I say that to segue into the Oscars last night.  As classy as it gets when it comes to performances and what this country represents.  I don’t watch many awards ceremonies but I do find myself glued to the Academy Awards.  So before we get to the charts, I wanna make a couple of acknowledgements.  Monique (who barely got supporting roles in Urban flicks) congrats on doin it your way and winning for Best Supporting Actress.  Sandra Bullock (who was getting typecast as a bumbling B version of Julia Roberts) congrats on maintaining your A list status and winning for Best Actress (beating out Helen Mirren & Meryl Streep… HUGE).  There are 20 more sites to get your Academy fix so I’ll leave the rest to them.
