Ymcmb-Cap--023-9219

There have been plenty of boutique labels that have made major marks in this industry. The current “Def Jam” appears to be Cash Money/Young Money records.  They have the artists, the pedigree, the sales & the longevity that lends to its leaders being real executives. But to keep that generational relevance there needs to be some sort of corporate rules. A step by step booklet for you to get.  I’m a firm believer that YMCMB is at risk. Here is why…. “Hero Complex” – an inherent desire to help others. It is a compulsion to help make their world right. Add in a healthy dose of ego and this is what Cash Money/Young Money is suffering from….

Here we go GoJu Nation. Another week, another chart listing for the people. Its been an interesting couple of weeks since the Grammy’s. With the passing of Whitney Houston creating a purchase frenzy, with new artists getting their say so along with the established ones making sure they aren’t forgotten in today’s landscape, it has created an interesting mix of albums making their mark. The most important thing that I take from this weeks listing is that demographic pockets of fans exist that seemingly follow artists in a way that mainstream has yet to quantify.  What that creates is projects like WZRD audibly popping out of nowhere to make a serious dent on da charts. Well that’s the beginning, lets see what else da charts have to offer…

Now we pick up the pace GoJu Nation… The end of the week brings us da digi-singles chart. Only Glee Cast with their latest (which will be a common occurrence until the TV season ends) breaks through on da chart this week. Your gonna have to bring it to break through on this list.  Lets give you some perspective. The number 10 single on this chart has more sales than the number 1 album in da country this week. Now understandably it is a smaller investment to buy the singles. But still, the overall consumption of digi-singles is starting to dwarf da album charts. Let’s dive in and take a deeper look.

Nice way to end the weekend right GoJu Nation?? I know how much you guys love da digi-singles chart.  It’s the only equalizer that gives you the actual climate of the music industry. And literally you can connect the dots of a successful artist and their singles etc.  Where else can you quantify if Tyga is a legitimate artist or no (in my Sammi Sweetheart voice)? Well by looking at this weeks chart its looks like (with Rack City) he has his 1st gold single. So the grinding with Chris Brown in his problem period along with Tyga always repping himself on every Young Money/Cash Money appearance has paid off.  Let’s see if Cory Gunz can keep the trend going.  If you’re keeping count GoJu Nation… that’s 3 successful artists on Lil Wayne’s label along with Drake and Nicki Minaj.  Very strong.

Here we go GoJu Nation. Wednesday has arrived and that means da album charts are here. And there are a nice amount of new albums making their mark this week. But that’s next paragraph. In the last album charts blog we discussed the potential revival of this particular industry map. And I really wanted to feel that this was the case. But last week the numbers threw me off so much I couldn’t even post so I waited to a week to see if the previous pattern has returned. I was upset to find out we may have gone back to that anemic place. I mean just look at these #’s. The number one album crawls just past 100k in sales. And the 20th album moves just about 13.5k. I’m coughing up phlegm just typing this GoJu Nation. I mean not to beat a dead horse but if we’re looking like this in the upcoming months, we are looking at just that… a dead horse.
